Does your background consist of a color other than white?

If it does, you should seriously consider changing it. Most successful websites have a white background with purpose in mind, and that is because white backgrounds not only make it easier to see, but they also communicate emotions like purity, grace, tranquility, and cleanliness. They also help the lettering to really stand out, so try to keep your background white if at all possible.

As far as design goes, do you use a lot of bright colors?

If you do, then you might want to think about some other choices. Bright colors distract from the purpose of your site, and they also need time for your eyes to adjust to. You might not have a ton of bright colors, but if it is enough that you need to refocus your eyes just to read the letters, then you will probably lose traffic because of it. Instead of bright colors, think of dark blues, greens, grays, or other neutral colors like this. Then, have your logo be bright and “out there” for the biggest effect. If your entire page is bright pink, that is probably bad. But if your page is white and blue, with a big pink heart at the top with your logo on it, then it will be eye catching without being too distracting.

Try to keep all these things in mind when you are designing your web page, and you might start to notice that your website looks more and more professional.

• Are you trying to match a theme, or are you going for something artsy/creative/spontaneous/romantic/explosive?

These are things to think about, and they are all very important. Every one of these elements will help you design a web page that appeals to people as they read it. Have you ever visited a website, took one look at the font and went “ugly”, because it reminded you of some kind of font that you hated for some reason? Well, more well known fonts will do that to people, which is why being spontaneous and creative with your fonts is a must. Try something nobody has done before, and go out on a limb.

Be Creative With Colors

Color is another element to any successful website that must be managed appropriately.

• What color is your background?
• Does it leave the text visible enough?
• Can you see well enough to distinguish links, controls, and text?
• Will you need to customize advertisements so that they will be visible?
• These are all color matters that you need to decide before you really get started.

Make Your Website User Friendly

And finally, ease of use.

• Is your website easy and friendly to navigate?
• Does it offer controls that work well?
• Can visitors successfully navigate about the page with little or no difficulty?

These are all things to keep in mind, and they are of dire importance. Nothing is more nerve wracking than a stressful website that will not let you leave… you can be sure that this type of website will send customers away who will never plan on returning.

These basic elements should make up the core of your web design.
